- Hello again Folks!
-
- I have solved our recent problem with AMosaic v2.0, pre-release 3; in
- fact, just a few minutes after putting the original post out into
- several groups, I came across another post which described the same
- problem - and a solution. (Sigh... story of my life.)
-
- Anyways, just to put some abs on your attention spans, geddaloado'this!:
-
- Y'see, on the A3000 here, I have the logical assignment 'HOME:' set for
- our InterNet programs' sub-system. Now, in AmiTCP/IP v4.2's
- 'db/password' file, I'd already set the relevant part of my user line to
- my temp directory (aka the logical assignment HOME:) - but, I'd left out
- the trailing slash. AmiTCP/IP v4.2 doesn't need the slash; hence, its
- requirement is not documented in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2 manual - but AMosaic
- *does* need it. AmiTCP/IP v4.2 allows you to have a logical assignment
- 'HOME:' which points to your home directory - and non-AmiTCP/IP related
- software can use this logical assignment to store temporary files. This
- means, you don't necessarily have to have a 'TempDir' line in your
- 'ENV:Mosaic/Prefs' file. However, you *must* add the slash - or colon,
- depending on what you've set as your 'HOME:' assignment - to the <home-
- dir> part of your user line in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2's 'db/password' file.
- (See the AmiTCP/IP v4.2's manual, P.122.)
-
- In relation to the above, the 'HOME:' assignment acts as a one-stop shop
- for several related programs. Incidentally, a concise, elegant concept,
- in keeping with the spirit of the Amiga - dont'cha think?. Of course,
- you could always cut through all this crap by simply following the
- instructions in AMosaic v2.0's 'readme' and putting in the 'TempDir'
- line in the prefs file! ;-) (But ol' Tony here, weeelll... he just likes
- to blow his days re-inventing the wheel...)
-
- So, the upshot is, in the absence of a strategic slash, Tony's AMosaic
- was trying to save incoming temp stuff to a *name or file* called 'tony'
- rather than to the sub-directory 'tony' - which, in fact, it is. (Well,
- I think that's what got AMosaic's tail in a twist.)
-
- Of course, this requirement for the slash is stressed in AMosaic Pre-
- release 3's 'readme' file, but I missed it 'cause, over-cautiously, I'd
- kept the old AMosaic 'readme' as 'readme', re-naming the new one to
- something else and temporarily forgetting it. Also, to add confusion to
- incompetence, there I was looking for the answer in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2
- manual! Not to worry, AMosaic is now running very well, allowing for the
- fact that its probably not the fastest web-walker on binary legs. ;-)
-
- Thanks very muchly to all those who offered advice - it's what being
- part of a network is all about - you're the right stuff, every one of
- you! ;-)
-
- I've just FTP'd 'Aweb' and will have a go with it over the week-end - it
- certainly seems promising. However, to be fair, I must say that now our
- wee glitch with AMosaic has been solved, the program performs OK. Over
- the last few days, Wifey and I have been using it extensively - text,
- graphics and forms - without any problems.
-
- Yessiree, she's been wholesomely gathering herbal recipes from every
- corner of the Net, visiting the world's libraries, educational
- institutes, etc. - and all down to good ol' MUI v3.3, PPP v1.45,
- AmiTCP/IP v4.2 and AMosaic v2.0! And me? Well, I've been visiting the
- 'Penthouse Home Page' - OH! My God! I can't believe I said that!
- Whaddagivvaway!!! What will people THINK! How politically incorrect! My
- God! The scandal! My 'goody-two-shoes' reputation... shattered! And here
- cometh Wifey! Hell's Teeth - I'm dog-tucker if she finds out! HALP! Tony
- on a hot tin roof... Where's the erase key...
-
- ;-) ;-) ;-)
-
-
- Cheers, Tony McKee
