  12. I have solved our recent problem with AMosaic v2.0, pre-release 3; in
  13. fact, just a few minutes after putting the original post out into
  14. several groups, I came across another post which described the same
  15. problem - and a solution. (Sigh... story of my life.)

  17. Anyways, just to put some abs on your attention spans, geddaloado'this!:

  19. Y'see, on the A3000 here, I have the logical assignment 'HOME:' set for
  20. our InterNet programs' sub-system. Now, in AmiTCP/IP v4.2's
  21. 'db/password' file, I'd already set the relevant part of my user line to
  22. my temp directory (aka the logical assignment HOME:) - but, I'd left out
  23. the trailing slash. AmiTCP/IP v4.2 doesn't need the slash; hence, its
  24. requirement is not documented in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2 manual - but AMosaic
  25. *does* need it. AmiTCP/IP v4.2 allows you to have a logical assignment
  26. 'HOME:' which points to your home directory - and non-AmiTCP/IP related
  27. software can use this logical assignment to store temporary files. This
  28. means, you don't necessarily have to have a 'TempDir' line in your
  29. 'ENV:Mosaic/Prefs' file. However, you *must* add the slash - or colon,
  30. depending on what you've set as your 'HOME:' assignment - to the <home-
  31. dir> part of your user line in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2's 'db/password' file.

  34. In relation to the above, the 'HOME:' assignment acts as a one-stop shop
  35. for several related programs. Incidentally, a concise, elegant concept,
  36. in keeping with the spirit of the Amiga - dont'cha think?. Of course,
  37. you could always cut through all this crap by simply following the
  38. instructions in AMosaic v2.0's 'readme' and putting in the 'TempDir'
  39. line in the prefs file! ;-) (But ol' Tony here, weeelll... he just likes
  40. to blow his days re-inventing the wheel...)

  42. So, the upshot is, in the absence of a strategic slash, Tony's AMosaic
  43. was trying to save incoming temp stuff to a *name or file* called 'tony'
  44. rather than to the sub-directory 'tony' - which, in fact, it is. (Well,
  45. I think that's what got AMosaic's tail in a twist.)

  47. Of course, this requirement for the slash is stressed in AMosaic Pre-
  48. release 3's 'readme' file, but I missed it 'cause, over-cautiously, I'd
  49. kept the old AMosaic 'readme' as 'readme', re-naming the new one to
  50. something else and temporarily forgetting it. Also, to add confusion to
  51. incompetence, there I was looking for the answer in the AmiTCP/IP v4.2
  52. manual! Not to worry, AMosaic is now running very well, allowing for the
  53. fact that its probably not the fastest web-walker on binary legs. ;-)

  59. I've just FTP'd 'Aweb' and will have a go with it over the week-end - it
  60. certainly seems promising. However, to be fair, I must say that now our
  61. wee glitch with AMosaic has been solved, the program performs OK. Over
  62. the last few days, Wifey and I have been using it extensively - text,
  63. graphics and forms - without any problems.

  65. Yessiree, she's been wholesomely gathering herbal recipes from every
  66. corner of the Net, visiting the world's libraries, educational
  67. institutes, etc. - and all down to good ol' MUI v3.3, PPP v1.45,
  68. AmiTCP/IP v4.2 and AMosaic v2.0! And me? Well, I've been visiting the
  69. 'Penthouse Home Page' - OH! My God! I can't believe I said that!
  70. Whaddagivvaway!!! What will people THINK! How politically incorrect! My
  71. God! The scandal! My 'goody-two-shoes' reputation... shattered! And here
  72. cometh Wifey! Hell's Teeth - I'm dog-tucker if she finds out! HALP! Tony
